Evaluation: Quiz by instructor TOPIC PRESENTATION: Operator's Manual A. Importance of Operator's Manuals 1. The operator's manual is an essential part of a tractor or other agricultural machinery; always read it completely before operating a tractor or other machinery for the first time in order to protect yourself as well as the equipment. 2. The operator's manual lists the manufacturer's recommendations for proper rpm settings, gear selection, operation adjustments, and maximum loads. These procedures and specifications for the individual machines should be followed in preference to general rule-of-thumb adjustments which can result in inefficient performance and/or costly damage to engines and components. 3. The operator's manual outlines specific timetables for routine maintenance checks and services necessary for preventive maintenance. 4. The operator's manual is the best source of specific safety information about the tractor or machine for which it has been written. 5. The operator's manual should be supplemented with a service manual when repair work beyond preventive maintenance becomes necessary and replacement parts must be ordered. Parts catalogs can also be helpful. B. Contents of Operator's Manuals 1. The table of contents identifies the main sections of the manual and the page numbers where they can be found. 2. The first section of an operator's manual usually deals with safety. 3. Subsequent sections usually present the following subjects: a. Controls and instruments b. Engine break-in procedure c. Prestarting checklist d. Starting and stopping procedures e. General operation and adjustment f. Preventive maintenance g. Troubleshooting charts C. Service Manuals 1. Although operator's manuals give some specifications for tune-up and adjustments, service manuals should be used for major tune-ups and repairs. 2. Service manuals can be obtained from equipment dealers, from manufacturers, or from publishing companies. 3. Service manuals give the manufacturers' recommended specifications and procedures to be used in servicing particular machines. 4. The complete service recommendations should be read before beginning any service work. 5. The recommended procedures should be followed exactly. 6. The service manual should be referred to each time service is performed; a written manual is a more reliable guide to proper service than memory. _________________________________________________________ ACTIVITY: 1. Use an operator's manual to learn how to operate a tractor or other agricultural machinery; additionally, use the manual to locate grease points. 2. Use an operator's manual to identify tractor parts numbered on a tractor. 3. Use an operator's manual or service manual to identify and order a repair or replacement part. _________________________________________________________ 6/17//91 OLR/tf #%&C
