Use of Computer Spreadsheets in Agribusiness Accounting 1. Computer spreadsheet programs can significantly reduce calculating time in preparing and analyzing financial statements. a. Spreadsheet programs are particularly useful for enterprise budgeting and cash flow projections. The computer makes it easy to compare the effect of different enterprises or production methods on such things as net income and borrowing requirements. b. Spreadsheets also make possible other "What if?" analyses examining the effects of different product prices on financial performance. 2. Spreadsheets are also very useful for cost analyses such as: a. Determining whether to rent or buy land or equipment. b. Comparing the cost of different financing options. 3. Spreadsheets can be connected together so that data does not need to be reentered in creating financial statements. a. For example, a set of related spreadsheets can be set up so that accounts receivable, accounts payable, inventory, and the cash flow summary are all updated when one purchase or sale is entered in the journal. ============================================================================== *** INSTRUCTOR PLEASE NOTE *** It is assumed that all students have previous knowledge of computer use through the core curriculum and CLF1100, Computers in Agribusiness. Inform the students that the following laboratory activity will help them understand how to use data as a management tool. Eventually they will be able to design and use their own spreadsheets for evaluating information. ============================================================================== ___________________________________________________________ ACTIVITY: 1. Using the Appleworks program, complete the activities in the booklet, "Appleworks Spreadsheets: A Hands-On Guide" published by the Computer Literacy Press. Students who are familiar with basic computer operations should complete the activities in Chapters 2 and 3. If students need to review computer concepts, Chapter 1 should be completed before attempting the later chapters. 2. Using the Mircrosoft Works program, complete the activities in Chapter 8 of the booklet "Microsoft Works Through Applications." 3. The example financial statements in Deere's FARM AND RANCH BUSINESS MANAGEMENT can be used to create spreadsheets which automatically calculate the various totals and subtotals. An example balance sheet is presented on pages 3-4 and 3-5 (Figure 9, Net Worth Statement). An earnings statement is presented on pages 3-10 and 3-11 (Figure 20, Income Statement).
