Students may obtain experience feeding animals as part of an animal-related SOE project. 2. Students should review and identify common feeds used in local livestock production. __________________________________________________________ B. Handling Livestock: REVIEW: (CLF3100) Livestock Tools, Equipment, and Restraint, in the Animal Science Cluster discusses concepts in animal handling: __________________________________________________________ ACTIVITY: 1. Have students watch the VEP filmstrip for cattle, "Handling, Equipment, and Facilities". 2. Have students properly halter and tie a steer or a horse, catch and hold a lamb or sheep, and use a hog cane to maneuver swine. 3. Take a field trip to a ranch or community college school farm and have students observe the facilities and practice handling livestock. __________________________________________________________ C. Managing Livestock: REVIEW: This section should cover basic production practices such as castration, docking, and dehorning. VEP filmstrips "Beef Cattle Castration", "Dehorning Beef Cattle", "Docking Sheep", and "Introduction to Swine Management" are all good alternatives if practical experience opportunities are not available. 2. Have students identify common types of equipment used in management practices such as dehorning, docking, and castration. 3.
