          Topic Objectives:  Upon completion of this lesson, the student 
                             will be able to:

          Learning Outcome #:

            (G-2)  -  Demonstrate proper grooming and showing techniques for
                      at least two large animal species of commercial
                      importance in California.

          Special Materials and Equipment:  Examples of show equipment:
                      show halters, scotch combs, various brushes, a blower,
                      blocking chute, show sticks, canes, cards, carding
                      tables, hand shears, and hoof nippers.  Live animals 
                      for demonstrations.  VEP Filmstrips; "Fitting and 
                      Showing Beef Cattle," "Fitting and Showing Sheep," and  
                      "Sheep Showmanship."

          References: Since fitting and showing styles change often, there 
                      is very little published information on this topic.
                      Perhaps the best references are the filmstrips 
                      available through VEP.

          Evaluation: By demonstration of proper fitting and showing
                      procedures of different livestock species and a 
                      quiz given by instructor.


TOPIC PRESENTATION:  FITTING AND SHOWING

          This lesson plan is designed to provide "hands-on" experience in 
          fitting and showing livestock.  If "hands-on" experiences are 
          unavailable, use the suggested filmstrips.

          ACTIVITY: 

          1.  Have students practice actual fitting and showing of
              local animals.  This may also be done at fairs and
              shows as part of an animal-related SOE project.

          2.  Use VEP filmstrips to illustrate fitting and showing
              procedures if animals and equipment are unavailable.

          3.  Take a field trip to a livestock show and have 
              students observe actual fitting and showing.
