UNIT GOAL: Students will identify the principles of botanical 
           classification and will demonstrate the ability to key 
           out plants from a simple botanical key.

UNIT OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

1. Define the word, "taxonomy."

2. List three bases on which plants can be classified and/or identified
   (i.e., morphology, physiology, and evolution).

3. Discuss three reasons for the current use of the modern system of
   plant classification (e.g., language barriers, universal names, and 
   standardization of evolutionary similarities).

4. List and discuss three applications the science of taxonomy has for the
   field of agriculture (e.g., plant, insect, and microorganism 
   identification).

5. Correctly identify 100 common ornamental plants listed in the California
   Agricultural Teachers' Association (CATA) Curricular Activities Code.

6. Identify the different types of leaf margins, leaf shapes, and other
   characteristics of leaves.

7. Sketch and name four types of leaf arrangemnts on a stem (e.g.,
   alternate, opposite, whorled, trifoliate).
