UNIT GOAL: The students will demonstrate a basic knowlege of planting
           medias and amendments, soil preparation and evaluation, and
           soil conservation.

UNIT OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

1. Review the four functions of soil.

2. Describe the soil texture considered ideal for gardening.

3. List and discuss four advantages of soil improvement and conservation
   techniques.

4. Discuss the importance of proper seedbed preparation and identify 
   four tools or pieces of equipment necessary for this task.

5. Explain the effect of depth of planting on seedling emergence.

6. Define compost and discuss its use in gardening.
