TOPIC PRESENTATION: FROST PROTECTION A. Protection of plants from frost or freezing can allow a person to grow special or exotic plants for personal enjoyment. B. Materials Used in Plant Protection 1. Burlap bag 2. Plastic sheeting 3. Shade cloth 4. Branches, mulch, leaves, etc. 5. Cardboard 6. Wooden, metal, or bamboo stakes C. Methods of Frost or Freezing Protection: 1. Plant the tender plants on the warm (south or west) side of the house or structure. 2. Plant under an overhang from a structure or evergreen tree. 3. Cover the plant with material. a. Place branches, mulch, or leaves over the plant before the frost. b. Build a frame around the plant and cover with plastic, burlap, etc. 4. Grow tender plants in movable containers. __________________________________________________________ ACTIVITY: 1. Just before winter, have students frost protect plants. For a comparison, do not protect all the plants. 2.
