Discuss why pruning is necessary for healthy plant growth. 2. Explain six methods for pruning trees and shrubs (e.g., thinning, heading back, drop crotch, topping). 3. Identify, use, and properly maintain pruning equipment. 4. Explain the difference between the three major types of tree pruning systems (i.e., open center, central leader, and modified central leader). 5. Discuss the purposes of training young trees to one of the three systems (i.e., extension of productive life, ease of maintenance, and strengthening of the tree) and demonstrate how to prune to establish scaffold branches. 6. Practice pruning methods on landscaped plants. 7. Identify the appropriate time for pruning plants and discuss why the time of pruning is important. 8. Demonstrate two basic methods of support for ornamentals and discuss how, when, and where supports are established, maintained, and removed. ____________________________________________________________________________ REFERENCES: Editors of Ortho Books.
