Greenhouses are the most visible and the most important structures in commercial plant production. 1. A greenhouse is an enclosed structure designed to provide ideal conditions of light, temperature, and humidity for the growing of plants. 2. Greenhouse Shapes a. Even span 1) This is the most common greenhouse shape. 2) It is a freestanding unit with the same degree of slope on each side. b. Uneven span 1) This shape is seldom used in the U.S. 2) It is designed to be used on slopes and to take advantage of the south slope. c. Ridge-and-furrow 1) This type of structure is common in large commercial nurseries. 2) It consists of two or more even-span houses joined at the gutter line. d. Greenhouse coverings may be of either glass, fiberglass, polycarbonate or polyethylene. B. Shade houses have several different uses in the nursery industry. 1. They are used to grow plants that must be grown in the shade or that do better growing in the shade. 2. They are also used to help plants that were started in the greenhouse adjust to the outside environment. C. Headhouse 1. This is a service area or building attached to a greenhouse, usually for housing temperature-control equipment and providing working and storage room. 2. It is called a headhouse because it is normally at the front or head of the greenhouse range. NOTE TO INSTRUCTOR: The instructor may want to add information on hot frames, mist beds, cold frames, etc. to this section. __________________________________________________________ ACTIVITY: 1.
