Discuss why pruning is necessary in crop production. 2. Explain the purposes of pruning fruit trees. 3. Define the following pruning terms: basin crotch, head, fruiting wood, leader, prune, scaffold, spur, sucker, thin, train, and watersprout. 4. Identify, use, and proerly maintain pruning equipment. 5. Prun, open center, modified central leader, and central leader type trees. 6. Explain the difference between the three major types of tree pruning systems. 7. Discuss the purposes of training trees to one of the three systems. 8. Prune small fruit trees grown locally. 9. Identify the appropriate time for pruning both trees and vines and discuss why the time of pruning is important. 10. Demonstrate how to prune to establish scaffold branches. 11. Discuss when it is appropriate to treat pruning wounds and demonstrate the proper methods of treatment. 12. Identify 3 common training systems (head, cordon, cane) that are currently used in Calif., and name a variety trained to each system. 13. Demonstrate a grapevine pruning technique in class. 14. Using specific terms, identify the external parts of a grapevine. 15. Define the following terms related to grapevine pruning head, cordon, cane, renewal spur, replacement spur and spur. 16. Discuss methods of pruning evergreen fruit trees. ____________________________________________________________________________ REFERENCES Mika, A. (1986).
